Wish Upon A Star in Disney's 'Pinocchio'

Disney's Pinocchio is the 2022 live-action remake of the beloved classic animated film of the same name. It tells the story of a wooden puppet who dreams of becoming a real boy. Many elements from the 1940 animated film of the same name appear in this live-action remake, including the one and only Jiminy Cricket. This article will discuss some returning elements in this movie. For one, viewers see how Jiminy Cricket breaks the fourth wall in some scenes. In the opening scene and the scene where Pinocchio tries to go to school, Jiminy Cricket tells the story directly to the audience, encouraging the viewers to get involved in the wooden puppet's journey of becoming a real boy and making his father proud. However, the wooden puppet's naive nature puts him into sticky situations that turn him into something he doesn't want to be. Also, in the opening Disney logo, Jiminy Cricket sings the song "When You Wish Upon A Star" to the opening logo music to introduce the story of Disney's Pinocchio. In the end, the viewers see Jiminy Cricket concluding the story as the screen reveals a book page followed by the book's title. One main feature Pinocchio has is that his nose grows when he tells a lie. This characteristic is very relevant to what happens in the animated film of the same name. In some ways, Pinocchio's growing nose helps him escape his cage. But in other ways, his lies can deceive others, doing more harm than good. Pinocchio tries to go to school, but the headmaster kicks him out because school is for real children and he is a wooden puppet. In the night, he finds himself among strangers. Many of the strangers he encounters are real human beings. As he tries to make his way into the world, he sometimes forgets what the Blue Fairy told him in the opening scene. Jiminy Cricket has to chase after the wooden puppet and bring him back to his senses. There is one main cluvie in Disney's Pinocchio. The Blue Fairy, played by Cynthia Erivo, is an African American woman. Other actors are composed of white men, including the director. Overall, this live-action remake is a funny comedy for everyone.

Everything The Critics Got Wrong About ‘Pinocchio’

So many remakes and so little time. A few weeks ago, I was able to watch the gleefully mesmerizing Disney remake that was Robert Zemeckis’ Pinocchio. I remember watching it with my mother who grew up with the animated Disney version and we were both enthralled by Zemeckis’ iteration.  However, after I looked at the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, I was quickly flummoxed as to why it was poorly received by critics as the film was labeled soulless, miscast, and unnecessary. Of course, any and all movies are unnecessary because nobody is holding a director, producer, or studio at gunpoint telling them to make a film or else!  I digress. The critics, nevertheless, lambasted the film and some even claimed that it was creepy in its execution. Let’s take a deep dive into everything the critics got wrong in this live-action Disney remake. A lot of the criticism about this remake has come from the casting of Cynthia Erivo. This sparked outrage from a slew of people. Much like The Little Mermaid, the casting decision has led to many people claiming that the Blue Fairy was not black but white. I say that doesn't matter because it is a fictional character not based around any geographical domain.  It’s very disgusting and regressive that people are so offended by a simple race-swapping of a character whose background we don’t even know and whose race was never really that important for it to remain stagnant. Luckily, the film is already out and nothing can be changed about that. It sounds like these criticisms are coming from a very personal place.
